Municipality of Skiathos

Autism-Friendly Skiathos

The island that welcomes you — and tells you in advance what to expect.

Every journey has its uncertainties. Here in Skiathos, we are working to reduce them. Our hotels, restaurants and shops have raised their awareness and made changes to both their spaces and the way they serve visitors. They have also provided answers in advance to the questions you usually ask: whether there is noise, crowding or waiting, and where you can sit somewhere quieter.

Why Skiathos

In Skiathos, people have been made aware of autism. At the airport, in the police, in the Municipality’s services, in schools and in businesses, they know what a person on the spectrum and their family might need. You will not have to explain everything from the start.

The village is small — it takes two days to learn it. The same streets, the same faces, the same route to the beach. By the third day you know where you are going without thinking about it.

Distances are short — which means you can always turn back. No excursion commits you for the whole day. If something is not going well, your accommodation is only twenty minutes away.

And there are places that are genuinely quiet. Beaches you reach by boat, with ten people on them. Bourtzi early in the morning, both inside the harbour and outside it.

What might be difficult here

Not everything is quiet, and there is no point hiding that.

The airport is one of the noisiest in the country. Planes pass low over the road and people gather to watch them. The sound is loud and sudden. If you are arriving by air, it is worth knowing before you land — and keeping earplugs in your pocket, not in your suitcase.

When the ferry docks, the port fills up within a few minutes, but it empties out relatively quickly too. If you are arriving by ferry, those difficult fifteen minutes are the only ones there are.

The village’s main streets are busy, especially in July and August. Narrow streets, music from several places at once, people moving in both directions. The same places are much calmer and friendlier the rest of the year.

Overall the island is calm, welcoming and friendly — even more so in the months outside the high tourist season.
